What is your favorite gate or fence on Bellevue Avenue? Come participate in a community panel and discussion focused on exploring some of the beautifully-designed gates and fences that line one of the most historic strees in America. From the c.1840 Egyptian-Revival obelisks at the Touro Synagogue Cemetery , to the gates of The Elms--which were nearly demolished in the 1960s--to the rows and rows of Victorian cast iron pillars and posts, the gates and fences of Bellevue Avenue are an essential part of Newport's historic character. Please join us for a colorful presentation and discussion of these superbly-designed objects.
Panelists: Moderator: Karen Jessup, Ph.D, Landscape Historian, Historic Preservation Specialist Michael Kathrens, Author, Newport Villas Mack Woodward, Architectural Historian, Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission Robert Foley, Director of Preservation, Newport Restoration Foundation
